Naskh, Kufi and Nastaliq: A Beginner's Guide to Arabic Calligraphy Styles

Arabic calligraphy is described as the highest art form of the Islamic world, and it earned that place: for centuries, the written word carried sacred text, decorated mosques and manuscripts, and turned language itself into ornament. Yet for a beginner, the names of the styles can blur into one elegant swirl. Naskh, Kufi, and Nastaliq are the three styles you will meet most often, and once you know what each was made for, you can recognise them at a glance and choose the right one for your own projects.

Naskh: The Clear Workhorse

Naskh is the style most people are reading every day. Developed as a clear, rounded, legible hand, it became the standard for copying books, and today most printed Qurans and the Arabic text on your phone use forms descended from it. Its letters sit calmly on the baseline, its curves are open, and nothing is exaggerated. If you are learning to read Arabic, or designing something that must above all be understood, Naskh is the choice that never distracts from the words themselves.

Kufi: Geometry You Can Read

Kufi is the oldest of the three and the easiest to spot. Born in the city of Kufa, it builds letters from straight lines and sharp angles, so words can look like architecture, mazes, or woven patterns. Early Qurans were written in Kufi, and its square forms still cover mosque walls and coins. It is magnificent for titles, logos, and decoration, but it was never meant for long passages; reading a full page of ornamental Kufi is hard work. Treat Kufi as calligraphy at its most sculptural, where the shape of the word matters as much as the word.

Nastaliq: The Flowing Bride of Scripts

Nastaliq arrived later, in the Persian world, and it behaves like handwriting in motion. Words slope downward from right to left, letters stretch and cascade, and lines have a rhythm closer to poetry than to print, which is fitting, because Nastaliq became the script of Urdu and Persian poetry. It is romantic and expressive, but demanding: it is used mainly for Urdu, Persian, and related languages rather than Arabic. To compare the personalities with your own words, you can preview Nashk, Kufi and Nastaliq fonts side by side and see which mood fits your card, artwork, or design.
