Credit Card Theft: Ex-Informant's Massive Data Breach

In a shocking development within the cybersecurity landscape, a 28-year-old former Secret Service informant has been linked to what officials are describing as the most extensive credit card information theft in American history.

The individual, identified as Albert Gonzales, is currently facing his third set of federal charges, this time for allegedly participating in the theft of magnetic strip data from more than 130 million credit and debit cards between 2006 and 2008.

Federal authorities have revealed that Gonzales was already in custody awaiting trial for two previous major cybercrime cases. His first trial, scheduled for next month in New York, involves hacking into Dave and Buster's payment processing systems. The second case, set for 2010 in Boston, concerns his alleged role in stealing data from over 40 million credit cards from major retailers including OfficeMax, Barnes & Noble, and BJ's Wholesale Club.

The Department of Justice has described the newest indictment as unprecedented in scale, detailing how Gonzales and his accomplices methodically researched victim companies' card systems before deploying sophisticated attacks to infiltrate networks and extract valuable financial data. According to investigators, the stolen information was distributed to servers operated by the group across multiple countries including the United States, Latvia, the Netherlands, and Ukraine.

Among the high-profile victims named in this latest case are Heartland Payment Systems (the nation's sixth-largest payment processor), 7-Eleven convenience stores, and Hannaford Bros. supermarkets. Earlier this year, Heartland had acknowledged a significant security breach, with executives suggesting it was connected to a larger criminal operation.

The technical method allegedly employed involved SQL injection attacks to install "sniffer" programs on retail computers, allowing the perpetrators to capture card numbers and account details as transactions occurred. Such information could then be encoded onto counterfeit cards or sold through underground markets.

The U.S. Secret Service is leading the investigation, with the case set to be tried in New Jersey federal court. Gonzales faces charges of conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy, adding to his legal troubles as he already potentially faces life imprisonment in the Boston case.
