Elden Ring: Nightreign – Co-op PvE Stress Test

I’ve spent four hours with the Elden Ring: Nightreign stress test, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. This isn’t a battle royale, but it borrows the best parts of that genre—the shrinking circle, the desperate loot-grab, the final showdown—and wraps them in pure cooperative PvE. No PvP here, just three Tarnished dropped into Limveld (not Limgrave) with nothing, racing against the clock to power up and survive five brutal phases. It’s frantic, it’s punishing, and I absolutely loved every failed run.

The Basics: Drop, Pick a Class, Survive

Each match begins in a Roundtable Hold, where you and two others (friends via password or randoms) choose from four test classes. Eight will be available at launch, but for now we have: Wylder (all-rounder with a blast attack), Duchess (glass-cannon who can repeat the last 1.5 seconds of damage dealt—great for doubling up on big hits), Guardian (tank who creates a revive shield), and Recluse (magic user who curses enemies to give HP/FP to allies). I gravitated toward the Duchess; her swift dodges and ability to amplify team damage made every fight feel like a high-wire act. The Recluse hits hard but burns through FP fast, and with no FP flasks in Nightreign, she’s a challenge to master.

A full run lasts 30–45 minutes, structured as Day 1 → Night 1 → Day 2 → Night 2 → Final Boss. Days are for looting and leveling; nights bring boss fights that demand coordination. When you drop, you’re level one with starter gear (plus any persistent relic buffs earned from previous runs). The map is packed with points of interest: churches give extra flask charges, castles host mini-bosses for better loot, and Rises (like Ranni’s Rise) offer puzzles and gear. The encroaching circle keeps you moving—risk vs. reward in every decision.

Speed Is Everything

Leveling is ridiculously quick. Each class has a predetermined stat path, so at a Site of Grace you just press Confirm to level up—sometimes three or four times in a row. Movement is faster too: sprinting is mapped to clicking the left stick and feels twice as fast as Elden Ring, fall damage is gone, and you can parkour up walls or use Spiritsprings to cover ground. The whole vibe is “move fast, don’t stop.”

Gear works like a roguelike build. There’s no armor except shields; you have six weapon slots and two amulet slots. Equipping a weapon grants its passive buffs even if you don’t use it—so a Reduvia dagger for bleed might be your main, but a spear that boosts status-effect buildup still helps. Synergies stack quickly, and sometimes you’ll melt bosses; other times you’ll get unlucky with drops and struggle. That unpredictability keeps every run fresh.

Night Bosses: Where Teams Break (or Shine)

Night two is the real skill check. In my six or seven runs, my team only survived it once. The bosses vary: we faced the Centipede Demon (tough but manageable) and three Sentinel Knights (brutal coordination required). You have to focus fire one knight while reviving teammates becomes increasingly harder as flasks run dry. The pressure is palpable—exactly the white-knuckle tension battle royale fans love, but here it’s purely cooperative.

After surviving night two, you get a brief rest to spend leftover runes on consumables or one last level, then it’s the final boss. Victory rewards relics—persistent meta-progression that boosts stats or sets you on a build path from the start. In this test, relics were the only long-term progression, but I’m hoping the full 2025 release adds more.

The Verdict

Nightreign captures the addictive loop of Elden Ring’s best moments—the panic, the triumph, the shared cheers—and condenses it into 40-minute bursts. It’s challenging, repeatable, and incredibly fun. Even after multiple failures, I couldn’t wait to jump back and see what crazy build RNG handed me next. If the final product has enough content, this could be the co-op experience souls fans have been dreaming of.
