Animal-Based Proteins Continue to Lead

Animal/dairy protein ingredients accounted for 67.6% of global revenue in 2025, making this category the leading product segment. Whey, milk proteins, egg protein, gelatin, casein, and collagen peptides are widely used because of their nutritional value, amino acid profiles, functionality, and established consumer acceptance. Demand from functional foods, sports nutrition, and clinical nutrition is supporting continued adoption.

However, plant-based and alternative protein sources are creating new avenues for innovation. Manufacturers are investing in technologies that can improve the taste, texture, functionality, and nutritional characteristics of plant proteins. Protein sources derived from cereals, legumes, roots, ancient grains, nuts, and seeds are being incorporated into an expanding range of products.

Insect protein is another emerging category, with the segment expected to grow at a CAGR of 14.4% from 2026 to 2033. Its development is being supported by interest in sustainable protein alternatives, nutritional density, and resource-efficient production. Microbe-based proteins, including algae, bacteria, yeast, and fungi, are also included within the expanding alternative protein landscape.

Food and Beverage Applications Drive Demand

Food and beverage applications accounted for 59.7% of global revenue in 2025, making the segment the largest application category. Protein ingredients are increasingly incorporated into protein bars, beverages, dairy products, baked goods, snacks, meat alternatives, breakfast cereals, dietary supplements, and sports nutrition products.

The growing popularity of convenient protein-rich foods is particularly important as consumers seek products that align with active lifestyles and wellness goals. Clean-label positioning and functional benefits such as satiety, muscle maintenance, and nutritional fortification are further influencing product development.

Animal feed is another important application, with protein ingredients for animal feed projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.3% from 2026 to 2033. The expansion of livestock, poultry, and aquaculture production is supporting demand for efficient protein-rich feed formulations.
