From Stone Quarry to Business Empire: The Suresh Pal Story
There's a particular kind of businessman you find in India's smaller cities — the kind who doesn't wait for opportunity to arrive from Delhi or Mumbai, but builds it right where he stands. Suresh Pal, the founder and chairman of SM Pal Group, is one of them. In 1982, while much of Haldwani was still a sleepy foothill town on the edge of the Kumaon hills, he started a stone and grit supply business. Four decades later, that same town is home to a business group with interests in mining, real estate, automobiles, and food processing, and a name that's recognized well beyond Uttarakhand.
This is the story of how that happened — not overnight, and not by accident.
The Early Years: Betting on Stone
Every business Suresh Pal has ever built traces back to one decision he made as a young man: to start Pal Stone Industries, supplying crushed and natural stone from a quarrying unit near Halduchaur, on the outskirts of Haldwani. It was a business built on physical labour, tight margins, and a lot of uncertainty. There was no family legacy to fall back on and no obvious shortcut — just a young entrepreneur betting on his own ability to deliver consistently.
That bet paid off faster than most. Pal Stone Industries earned supply contracts with the Indian Railways and the National Highways Authority of India, two of the most demanding institutional buyers in the country when it comes to quality and reliability. The company was also entrusted with material supply for the Gokul Dam Project, a mark of the kind of trust that doesn't come easily to a first-generation business. For Suresh Pal, this wasn't just commercial success — it was proof of concept. If a stone supply business run out of a small hill town could win over government bodies and infrastructure giants, there was no reason the same values couldn't work in other industries too.
Turning One Business Into Several
Most entrepreneurs who find success in one sector are tempted to simply do more of the same. Suresh Pal took a different route. Over the following decades, he used the credibility and capital built through Pal Stone Industries to enter entirely new sectors — each time starting small, learning the industry from the ground up, and scaling only once the fundamentals were right.
Real Estate: Pal Colonisers
Around the year 2000, Suresh Pal turned his attention to Haldwani's housing needs. At the time, much of the city's residential development was informal and unplanned. He founded Pal Colonisers to change that, introducing organized colonies with proper infrastructure — internal roads, open spaces, and basic civic amenities — at a time when few developers in the region were thinking that way.
The company has since grown well beyond its first projects, developing residential communities that include modern conveniences such as landscaped parks, jogging tracks, open gyms, and community centres, along with easy access to schools, hospitals, and transport connections. Pal Colonisers today ranks among the more established real estate names in Uttarakhand, with its footprint extending from central Haldwani to the city's growing outskirts.
Automobiles: Building a Dealership Network
Suresh Pal's next move took the group into an entirely different world: automobile retail. Pal Group entered into dealership partnerships with established international carmakers — Ford, Nissan, and later Skoda — bringing organized, brand-backed car buying and servicing to a market that had previously relied heavily on unorganized local dealers.
The dealership business grew on the back of the same principle that had worked in stone and real estate: treat the customer as the actual measure of success, not just the sale. That approach helped the group's showrooms build a loyal customer base across the region.
Food Processing: Pal Frozen Foods and the Birth of Pal Fresh
Perhaps the most striking pivot came in 2013, when Suresh Pal identified a fast-growing opportunity in India's frozen food market — an industry with almost no connection to his earlier ventures in stone, real estate, or automobiles. He launched Pal Frozen Foods, processing frozen vegetables under the consumer brand Pal Fresh, later adding the Frozzo brand for snack products.
What began as a regional processing unit has since scaled into a business with distribution across India. Just as importantly, the venture created a direct link between the group and local farmers, giving Pal Frozen Foods a role in supporting agricultural livelihoods in the region — something Suresh Pal has spoken about as being just as important to him as the commercial upside.
The Common Thread
Look closely at these four businesses — stone, real estate, automobiles, and frozen foods — and there's little on the surface that connects them. But spend time understanding how each one was built, and a clear pattern emerges. Suresh Pal has consistently entered industries where he saw a gap between what customers needed and what was actually being offered, and then built businesses designed to close that gap through consistency rather than shortcuts.
He's also known within the group for being deeply involved in choosing the people who run each vertical. Rather than simply delegating and stepping back, he has personally shaped the leadership teams across Pal Stone Industries, Pal Colonisers, the dealership network, and Pal Frozen Foods, instilling the same values of transparency and customer focus in each one. Employees who've spent years — in some cases decades — with the group often describe this hands-on mentorship as one of the defining features of working there.
Beyond Business: A Foundation Built on Giving Back
SM Pal Group's growth hasn't stayed confined to balance sheets. Through the SM Pal Group Foundation, the organization runs educational institutions that provide merit-based access to quality education, including for students from underprivileged backgrounds, and the foundation reaches thousands of people every year through its various initiatives. For Suresh Pal, community contribution isn't treated as separate from business — it's framed as part of the same long-term vision.
Passing the Baton, Carrying the Vision
Today, while Suresh Pal remains chairman and continues to guide SM Pal Group's overall direction, the next generation has begun stepping into leadership roles, with his son Prateek Pal now serving as director of the group. It's a natural transition for a business built to last beyond one person — but the founding philosophy hasn't changed. Quality over shortcuts. Trust over quick wins. And a willingness to enter a completely new industry, starting from scratch, if the opportunity is right.
More than 40 years after he first started supplying stone and grit from a quarry near Haldwani, Suresh Pal's story is a reminder that big business empires don't always start with big plans. Sometimes they start with one solid delivery, followed by another, and another — until, one day, those deliveries add up to an empire.
