Understanding Your LGBTQ+ Identity: Sexuality, Gender, and Coming Out

Figuring out your gender identity or sexuality can take time. You may know exactly how you identify, or you may have questions that do not have clear answers yet. Either way, there is no deadline for understanding yourself or choosing a label.

If you are questioning your identity, learning about different LGBTQ+ identities can help you understand your feelings without putting pressure on yourself to define them immediately.

Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Are Different

One of the first things to understand is that gender identity and sexual orientation describe different parts of who you are.

Gender identity refers to how you understand your own gender. Someone may identify as a man, woman, non-binary, or another gender identity. Sexual orientation, meanwhile, describes who someone may experience romantic, emotional, or sexual attraction toward.

This distinction matters because being non-binary does not automatically tell you anything about your sexuality. A non-binary person can be straight, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, or identify with another sexual orientation.

You may also come across the phrase “non binary sexuality” when researching these identities. It is important to remember that non-binary describes gender, rather than a specific sexual orientation.

Understanding Bisexual and Pansexual Identities

People sometimes use different labels to describe similar experiences of attraction. Bisexuality generally refers to attraction to more than one gender, while pansexuality is often described as attraction that is not limited by gender.

When comparing pansexual vs bisexual identities, there can be overlap. The difference is not always as simple as being attracted to a particular number of genders. Many people choose the label that best reflects how they personally experience attraction.

There is no requirement to choose one label over another. If a particular term feels right to you, you can use it. If neither feels right, you do not need to use either.

Can a Non-Binary Person Be Gay?

Yes. Gender identity and sexual orientation are separate, so a non-binary person can identify as gay.

If you have ever wondered “is non binary gay,” the answer depends on the individual. Some non-binary people may describe themselves as gay because it reflects their experience of attraction or their connection to the LGBTQ+ community. Others may use different terms.

Labels are tools for describing your experience, not rules that determine who you are.

What Does Asexuality Mean?

Asexuality generally refers to experiencing little or no sexual attraction. It exists on a spectrum, and people's experiences can differ considerably.

Some people may experience romantic attraction even when they do not experience sexual attraction. Others may experience very limited sexual attraction in certain circumstances.

If you are researching asexual signs, remember that there is no medical checklist that can determine whether someone is asexual. Questions about whether you experience sexual attraction, how frequently you experience it, and whether the concept of sexual attraction feels relevant to your relationships may help you reflect on your experiences.

You also do not need to prove your identity to anyone.

Coming Out Is a Personal Choice

Once you begin understanding your identity, you may wonder whether you should tell your parents, friends, or other people in your life.

There is no single correct way to do this. Some people feel comfortable telling someone immediately, while others prefer to wait until they feel emotionally, financially, and physically safe.

If you are considering how to come out to parents, think about their likely response and whether you have a safe place to stay or someone you can contact for support if the conversation does not go well.

You can also choose to tell one trusted person first rather than sharing your identity with everyone at once.

You Do Not Have to Choose a Label Immediately

Questioning your sexuality or gender does not mean you are confused or doing something wrong. Your understanding of yourself can change as you learn more about your feelings and experiences.

You might use one label today and a different one later. You might eventually decide that no label describes you perfectly. All of these experiences are valid.

Try to focus less on finding the “perfect” identity and more on understanding what makes you feel comfortable, respected, and genuinely yourself.

Finding Support While You Figure Things Out

Having a supportive person to talk to can make the process easier. This could be a trusted friend, LGBTQ+ community member, counselor, or online community where you feel safe.

You can also take things slowly. Read about different identities, listen to other people's experiences, and give yourself room to figure out what resonates with you.

Most importantly, coming out is not something you owe anyone. Your identity belongs to you, and you get to decide when, how, and whether you want to share it.
