OFC Cable Construction Explained: Core, Cladding and Armouring

Optical fibre cable, or OFC, looks like a single unremarkable wire from the outside. Underneath that outer jacket, though, it's built in carefully engineered layers, each doing a specific job to keep light signals travelling cleanly over long distances without damage from moisture, tension, or physical impact.

What OFC Cable Actually Carries

OFC means optical fibre cable, and unlike a copper cable, it doesn't carry electrical current. It carries data as pulses of light through thin strands of glass, which is why the internal construction focuses almost entirely on protecting that fragile glass core rather than insulating a conductor.

Layer by Layer: How OFC Cable Is Built

The Core

At the centre of every fibre strand is the core, an extremely thin strand of ultra-pure glass through which the light signal actually travels. The core's diameter and purity directly affect how much signal loss occurs over distance, which is why manufacturing precision at this stage matters more than almost any other part of the cable.

Cladding

Surrounding the core is the cladding, a layer of glass with a different refractive index than the core itself. This difference is what keeps the light signal bouncing inward along the fibre rather than escaping outward, a principle known as total internal reflection. Without cladding, a bare glass fibre would leak light and lose signal almost immediately.

Buffer Coating

Around the cladding sits a buffer coating, usually a plastic layer that protects the glass from moisture, abrasion, and minor physical stress during handling and installation. This is the first layer that gives the otherwise fragile glass fibre some real-world durability.

Strength Member

Since glass fibre itself has very little tensile strength, cables include a dedicated strength member, commonly fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) or aramid yarn, running through or alongside the buffered fibres. This layer absorbs the pulling force during installation, so the glass core itself is never subjected to tension it can't handle.

Armouring

For cables destined for underground, industrial, or high-risk installation environments, an additional armouring layer, typically corrugated steel tape, is added beneath the outer jacket. Armouring protects the cable against crushing forces, rodent damage, and physical impact that a standard unarmoured cable wouldn't survive in a buried or exposed application.

Outer Jacket

The final layer is the outer jacket, engineered differently depending on where the cable will be installed, underground, in ducts, aerially, or indoors, each requiring different resistance to UV exposure, moisture, temperature, and mechanical wear.

Why Construction Choices Vary by Application

Not every OFC cable needs armouring, and not every installation needs the same buffer or strength member configuration. A cable destined for a controlled indoor environment has very different mechanical demands than one being directly buried along a highway corridor or strung between utility poles. Construction decisions, armoured or unarmoured, loose tube or tight buffered, single-mode or multi-mode fibre, are made based on the specific conditions the cable will face over its service life, not as a one-size-fits-all specification.

Why This Matters Beyond the Technical Detail

Understanding OFC construction isn't just useful for engineers specifying cable for a project. It also explains why two cables that look identical on the outside can perform very differently once installed, since the layers doing the real protective work are invisible from the outside. A cable built with the wrong construction for its environment, unarmoured cable buried directly in soil, for example, is far more likely to develop faults years before it should.
