Off-the-shelf vs custom e-learning courses: how do you decide?

When a team needs to roll out training quickly, the first fork in the road is usually whether to build courses from scratch or buy ready-made ones. Both routes are common, and the right answer seems to depend on what the training is actually for.

Ready-made courses tend to make sense for subjects that are the same for almost everyone: general workplace safety awareness, data protection basics, harassment prevention, fire safety, and similar compliance topics. The rules behind them don't change much from one company to another, so writing the content again internally often means spending time on something that already exists. Custom courses tend to earn their place when the material is specific to how a company works: internal tools, its own processes, its product knowledge, its culture.

2. Who owns the update work? Regulations and guidance change, and someone has to notice and revise the material. With purchased content that is often partly the provider's job, but it is worth confirming how updates are handled before committing.
3. How much of the course depends on your own examples? Generic scenarios can feel distant to staff, so some teams add a short internal briefing after a standard course.
4. Where will the course live? Content is only half of it. You also need a way to assign it, remind people and keep a record of who finished what.
