Vehicle Mobility, Road Transport, and the Evolving Tire Demand Landscape Across Africa

Africa’s automotive and road-transport ecosystem is closely connected to the movement of people and goods across cities, national borders, and regional trade corridors. Tires remain an essential component of this system, supporting passenger vehicles, commercial fleets, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and off-road applications. Changes in vehicle ownership, freight activity, road infrastructure, and vehicle replacement cycles can therefore influence tire requirements across different countries and applications.

A comprehensive market assessment by Markntel Advisor reveals that the Africa Tire Market is valued at USD 7.92 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 10.20 billion by 2032, registering a CAGR of 4.31% during 2026–2032. The study uses 2025 as the base year and identifies OEM as the leading segment by demand type. The Africa tire industry analysis covers tire types such as radial and bias and vehicle categories including three-wheelers, two-wheelers, passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, and off-the-road vehicles.

Vehicle Fleet Development Shapes Tire Requirements

The expansion and renewal of vehicle fleets are important factors influencing tire demand. Africa has a comparatively low level of motorization, while vehicle populations are expected to increase over the longer term. UNECE has highlighted that the African vehicle fleet could grow four to five times by 2050, with a substantial portion of this increase expected to come from imported used vehicles. This creates requirements not only for original equipment but also for replacement tires as vehicles remain in service.

Road transport is also central to economic activity across the continent. According to the African Development Bank, roads carry around 80% of goods and 90% of passenger traffic in Africa, making dependable road mobility an important element of regional commerce. The Bank’s cross-border road transport assessment also highlights the role of road corridors in connecting production centers, ports, and consumption markets.

OEM Demand Reflects Vehicle Production and Assembly

OEM represents the leading demand type in the study, linking tire requirements with vehicle manufacturing and assembly activity. Tires supplied as original equipment must meet vehicle-specific specifications concerning dimensions, load capacity, performance, and operating conditions.

The OEM segment also reflects developments across different vehicle categories. Passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, buses, trucks, and other commercial platforms can require different tire constructions and performance characteristics. As vehicle fleets become more diverse, tire manufacturers and suppliers may need to accommodate varying requirements across urban mobility, logistics, agriculture, construction, and long-distance transportation.

Commercial Vehicles Remain Important to Road Mobility

Commercial vehicles are particularly relevant in an environment where road transportation plays a major role in passenger and freight movement. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles require tires designed for higher loads, extended operating cycles, and diverse road conditions.

The African Development Bank has also emphasized the importance of improving regional road corridors to facilitate cross-border transport and trade. Such infrastructure development can affect vehicle utilization patterns, route distances, and fleet requirements, while improvements in road connectivity may influence demand for tires designed for different operating environments.

Road Safety and Tire Performance

Tire condition is directly connected with vehicle safety, making regulatory oversight and technical inspection important considerations. UNECE’s work on safer and cleaner used vehicles in Africa emphasizes the importance of vehicle standards, periodic technical inspection, and regulatory frameworks for improving vehicle safety.

The UN vehicle regulation framework includes technical requirements covering tires and other vehicle components, while its Global Technical Regulation No. 16 specifically addresses tire requirements. Such frameworks can influence the characteristics and quality expectations of tires entering and operating within African markets.

Replacement Demand and Used Vehicles

The growing presence of used vehicles creates a significant replacement-tire dimension alongside OEM demand. Vehicles imported into African countries may remain operational for extended periods, generating recurring requirements for replacement tires based on mileage, operating conditions, vehicle age, and maintenance practices.

At the same time, differences in road quality, climate, terrain, and transportation patterns can influence tire selection. Urban passenger vehicles may prioritize different characteristics from long-haul commercial fleets, while agricultural and construction equipment can require specialized off-road tire designs.

Outlook

Africa’s tire demand landscape is shaped by vehicle fleet development, road transportation, commercial activity, vehicle imports, and evolving safety requirements. The study’s identification of OEM as the leading demand type highlights the connection between tire requirements and vehicle supply, while replacement demand remains relevant as existing fleets continue operating. Future industry development is likely to reflect changes in mobility, infrastructure connectivity, vehicle standards, and the composition of Africa’s expanding vehicle fleet.
