How Shopify SEO Agencies Handle International SEO and Multi-Currency Stores

Selling to customers in other countries sounds simple: add a currency, translate a few pages, and wait for orders. In practice, it is one of the easiest things to get wrong on Shopify. A store can accept euros and still never show up in Google Germany.

Specialist Shopify SEO agencies tend to follow the same playbook. This article explains that process in plain language, so you can judge your own setup or know what to ask an agency.

The Big Idea: Currency and Search Visibility Are Two Different Things

The most common mistake agencies fix is treating currency and SEO as one job. They are separate.

  • Currency decides what price a shopper sees and pays.
  • International SEO decides whether Google can find and rank the right version of your page for the right country.

Shopify Markets is the tool that connects them. A market is a group of countries that share settings such as currency, language, domain or subfolder, and pricing. The catch is that Shopify only creates hreflang tags for markets that have their own domain, subdomain, or subfolder. A market set up only to change currency has no unique URL, so search engines never learn it exists.

That is why agencies start every project by asking one question per market: do you want to rank in that country as a local store, or just accept its currency?

Step 1: Choose the URL Structure

Shopify supports three options, and all of them can work for SEO.

Structure Example Best for
Subfolders yourstore.com/de/ Most stores. Authority stays on one domain.
Subdomains de.yourstore.com Little upside over subfolders for most brands.
Country domains yourstore.de Brands that want the strongest local trust signal and can fund separate domains.

Most agencies recommend subfolders as the default. Your backlinks and authority all benefit one domain, and setup is simpler. Country domains make sense for brands that already own them or need a strong local identity, but each domain builds its own authority, which means more work and cost.

If you use custom domains, they must be connected in Shopify’s domain settings and assigned to the right market. Domains set up outside Markets do not get automatic hreflang tags.

Step 2: Check Hreflang Tags

Hreflang tags tell Google which version of a page is meant for which language and region. When markets have their own subfolders or domains, Shopify generates these tags automatically, including an x-default fallback. Shopify also adds self-referencing canonical tags.

Agencies still verify this work, because the automatic output has limits:

  • Pages with untranslated content may not get correct hreflang tags.
  • If a product is excluded from one market, hreflang tags can point to a page that no longer exists.
  • Duplicate content warnings usually point to a hreflang problem or identical content across versions.

A typical audit uses Google Search Console and a hreflang testing tool, then checks the product, collection, and homepage templates in every market.

Step 3: Localize, Don’t Just Translate

Hreflang tells Google what you intend. It does not make weak content rank. This is where agencies add the most value.

Common mistakes they correct:

  • Same-language markets with nothing localized. A US page copied to the UK and Australia with only the currency changed.
  • Half-translated pages. A translated product title with an English description and English meta tags.
  • Skipped metadata. Page titles, meta descriptions, image alt text, and URL handles left in the original language.

Good localization means using the words local shoppers actually search for. In British English, a “jumper” is not a “sweater.” In German, a keyword translated word for word may not match what people type into Google. Shopify does not translate your store on its own, so agencies use a translation tool or app and then have a native speaker review the key pages.

Step 4: Set Up Multi-Currency Correctly

On the commerce side, the setup depends on how you take payments.

With Shopify Payments: Shopify Payments, along with Adyen as a primary gateway, can process payments in the customer’s local currency. Supported methods include card payments, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal Express. The price is the product price multiplied by the exchange rate, plus a currency conversion fee.

With another payment provider: Local currency only changes how prices are displayed. The customer may then pay in your store’s base currency, which can cause confusion at checkout. Agencies flag this early because surprise prices lose sales.

With Managed Markets: This is Shopify’s cross-border option, powered by Global-e. It acts as the seller for international orders, handles duties and taxes at checkout, and adds more local payment methods. It charges per-transaction fees, so agencies compare the cost against the conversion lift.

Agencies also review these pricing details:

  • Rounding rules. Prices like 49.99 look more natural than 51.37 after conversion. Shopify offers rounding options, and custom rules depend on your plan.
  • Manual or market-specific prices. Some products should not be priced by simple conversion. A fixed local price can protect margins.
  • Shop currency versus presentment currency. Reports are in your store currency, while customers see their own. Agencies make sure analytics and ad reports account for this.

Step 5: Avoid the Redirect Trap

Automatic redirects based on a visitor’s location seem helpful, but they can hurt SEO. If a crawler from the US is forced to the US version, it may never see your other versions.

Agencies usually prefer a soft approach: show a banner or country selector that offers the right market, and let the visitor choose. Shopify’s own redirect features are designed not to block crawlers, but any extra app or script that forces redirects should be reviewed.

If you remove a market, set up URL redirects so customers and search engines do not land on dead pages.

Step 6: Handle Feeds, Sitemaps, and Search Console

The final layer covers measurement and discoverability:

  • Sitemaps. Shopify generates an international sitemap. Agencies submit it and watch for indexing gaps by market.
  • Search Console. Subfolder markets can be tracked with filters. Agencies also check the International Targeting setting where relevant, though hreflang is the more precise signal.
  • Google Merchant Center. Each country needs correct prices, currency, shipping, and tax in its product feed.
  • Local links and listings. Backlinks from sites in the target country help a market earn trust.

A Quick Checklist You Can Use

  1. Decide which markets need to rank and which only need to sell.
  2. Give each ranking market its own subfolder or domain inside Shopify Markets.
  3. Confirm hreflang and canonical tags on key templates.
  4. Localize titles, descriptions, handles, and metadata.
  5. Check whether your payment setup supports checkout in local currency.
  6. Review rounding, market pricing, and duties and taxes.
  7. Avoid forced location redirects.
  8. Submit sitemaps, check Search Console, and update your product feeds.

Final Thoughts

Shopify handles much of the technical groundwork for international SEO. What usually fails is the planning around it: markets created for currency only, content that was never localized, and redirects that hide pages from Google. A good Shopify SEO agency closes those gaps, so both your pricing and your search visibility work in every country you sell to.

Features, fees, and plan limits change often, so confirm current details in Shopify’s Help Center before committing to a setup.
