How Much Do Marketing Agencies Charge in 2026? A Buyer’s Guide
Two proposals for similar work can differ by thousands of dollars a month, and the headline fee rarely tells the whole story. Before you compare quotes, it helps to know the common pricing models, what usually sits outside the fee, and which questions keep proposals comparable.
How Much Do Marketing Agencies Charge? Typical Benchmarks
Pricing follows scope and ad spend. For paid media management, WebFX puts typical fees at 10% to 20% of ad spend, or around $1,000 to $3,000 a month for smaller budgets (WebFX, September 2026). Its published tiers show a common hybrid: a minimum fee or a percentage of spend, whichever is higher, with the percentage stepping down as budgets grow.
Clutch’s verified client reviews put the average PPC engagement at $7,165.33 a month, at $100 to $149 an hour, while social media marketing averages $25 to $49 an hour (Clutch, September 2026). Treat these as reference points, not quotes. Your category, margins and channel mix will move the number.
Why an Ecommerce Growth Agency Costs More
A growth agency that bundles creative production, email and conversion work sits above those figures because it is several scopes priced as one. That can be good value if one team coordinates the work, or poor value if you are paying for services you already have. Ask for each scope to be priced separately so you can see what you are buying.
How to Compare Marketing Agency Pricing Fairly
Four habits keep quotes comparable:
-
Price at your future spend. Convert every proposal into a monthly cost at the spend you expect in six months, since percentage fees grow with the budget.
-
List what sits outside the fee. Creative production, tools, landing page builds and setup charges are the usual extras.
-
Ask what happens if spend doubles. The answer shows how the fee scales.
-
Confirm ownership. Ad accounts, Pixel, data and creative should stay in your name if you part ways.
Also ask which number you will be judged on. If the answer is platform ROAS alone, the strategy layer may be missing.
Visibility matters too. Only 28% of advertisers in ANA’s 2025 agency compensation research said they had adequate visibility into how their agencies make money (ANA Magazine, 6 October 2026). Asking for fees, markups and tool costs in writing is ordinary diligence.
When a Fractional CMO Is Worth Pricing In
If the gap is the plan rather than execution capacity, a senior strategist may be a better first spend than another channel retainer. On GoFractional, the average asking rate for ecommerce fractional CMOs is $208 an hour, with the middle 50% between $150 and $244, across 56 observations from July to October 2026 (GoFractional, October 2026). These are asking rates, not retainers, but they show senior strategy is within reach of an agency-sized budget.
Our fractional CMO service is built for brands spending $50K or more a month on ads. For the full picture, read our guide to what an ecommerce growth agency does, costs and how to choose one.
