Missed Your Flight Due to Traffic? Here’s What to Do
Traffic, long security lines and late taxis are some of the most common reasons travelers miss flights. Most airlines treat these as passenger-caused delays, but you still have options.
Call the airline before the flight departs
If you know you are running late, contact the airline right away. Some will hold your booking or move you to the next flight, especially if the gate hasn’t fully closed.
Know the check-in cutoff
Most airlines close check-in 45 to 60 minutes before departure for domestic flights and up to 60 to 90 minutes for international ones. Arriving after the cutoff usually means you can’t board, even if the plane is still at the gate.
Ask about same-day standby
Many airlines offer standby on later flights the same day. It can be free or cost a small fee, which is often cheaper than a new ticket.
Don’t assume you lost everything
Even on non-refundable fares, unused taxes and airport fees can often be refunded. Always ask.
