What Actually Works in Off-Page SEO in 2026 (and What I Stopped Wasting Money On)

I've been doing SEO for client sites for years now, buying links early on and later building my own. Some of it worked great. A lot of it didn't. And honestly, the stuff that burned me the most wasn't the expensive orders, it was the cheap ones that looked like a bargain until I checked them a month later and half the links weren't even indexed.

So this isn't a "top 10 SEO tips" post. It's what my setup looks like right now, split into the five things I keep coming back to. Full disclosure up front: I ended up building my own services for each of these after getting burned too many times, and I've linked them below.

Guest posts (but only from people who do their own outreach)

My first few guest post orders went to sellers with huge lists and crazy low prices. Turned out most of them were reselling the same sites everyone else was reselling. I'd pay $80 for a post the site owner was charging $35 for. Nobody could tell me who actually ran the site, and when a link disappeared, good luck getting it back.

That's why I started doing the outreach myself and dealing with site admins directly. It's now my real outreach guest posts service on BHW. Prices start at $10, and some sites go up to DA 90. Buyers see actual traffic before ordering, not just a DA number someone typed into a spreadsheet.

Quick tip from experience. If a site has DA 60 and 300 visits a month, walk away. That number was pumped.

PBNs, for the pages that need a push

Yeah, I still use PBNs. Not for everything. Mostly to power up guest posts I've already got, or to give a stubborn page that last bit of push onto page one.

The thing nobody warns you about is indexing. I once bought 50 PBN links and checked them three weeks later. Eleven were indexed. Eleven! The rest were sitting on dead domains Google had given up on ages ago.

So when I built my own network, indexed domains were rule number one. That's my John Wick PBN backlinks thread. DA/DR 50+ domains, and I run indexing on every post for free, so buyers don't have to pay a separate indexer.

Google Business Profile, if you've got any local clients

For local businesses this matters more than anything else on this list. I had a plumber client who was stuck on page three of the map results for his own town. His primary category was wrong. That was it. We fixed it, filled in the services and hours properly, added real photos, and within a few weeks he was in the Map Pack.

Most profiles I audit have at least one of those problems. If you don't want to deal with it yourself, my GMB setup service handles the full build and hands over the login, plus a year of support afterwards. That support bit is worth having, because Google loves asking for re-verification at the worst possible time.

Citations (boring, but they work)

Nobody gets excited about citations. I get it. But when your business name, address and phone number show up the same way across dozens of directories, Google trusts the listing more. When they don't match, say "St." in one place and "Street" in another, with an old phone number floating around, rankings can stall and you'll never figure out why.

I gave up on automated submission tools after finding one client's details on some directory in a language I couldn't even read. Manual is the only way I do it now. My manual local citation service does 30 to 100 citations by hand on proper directories, and I pair it with the GMB work every time.

Content, because links need somewhere to point

This one took me way too long to learn. I used to throw links at thin pages and wonder why they wouldn't hold their rankings. The page has to be worth ranking first. Otherwise you're just pouring water into a bucket with a hole in it.

Whoever writes your content, make sure they actually research the topic instead of rewording the top three Google results. That's the standard I hold my own professional SEO content writing service to. You can tell the difference in about two paragraphs.

How I put it all together

For local clients, I start with the Google Business Profile and citations, then add content and a few guest posts once the basics are sorted. For affiliate and ecommerce sites it's the other way round. Content and guest posts come first, with PBNs as a second layer pointing at the best guest posts.

The one rule I stick to now, buying or selling? Show something the buyer can check before they pay, and a report with live URLs after. Every bad experience I've had came from skipping that step because the price looked too good.

That's my setup. It's not fancy, but it's what's been working.
