Reducing Water Loss in Growing Tier-2 Cities: Where to Start

Many tier-2 cities in India are growing faster than their water networks. New colonies are added at the edges, old pipes in the centre keep ageing, and a good share of the water pumped into the system never reaches a paying customer. Fixing this does not always need a brand new network. It needs a clear order of work.

1. Measure before you dig

Bulk meters at treatment plants, reservoirs and the inlets of each zone show where water goes. Without them, every leak hunt is a guess. Dividing the city into district metered areas lets engineers compare what goes into a zone with what is billed.

2. Fix the service connections

The short pipes from the main to each house are often the weakest point. Old GI service lines rust, and many illegal or unmetered connections hide among them. Replacing them with polyethylene service pipe and proper meters cuts leakage and improves revenue at the same time.

3. Manage pressure

High pressure at night, when demand is low, pushes more water out of every crack. Pressure-reducing valves and better scheduling of pumping can reduce losses without touching the pipes.

4. Replace the worst mains first

Use burst and complaint records to find the stretches that fail repeatedly and replace those first. Modern polyethylene mains with fused joints, laid with trenchless methods where possible, can be installed with less disruption to busy roads.

5. Keep the records

A simple digital map of pipes, valves and repairs pays for itself within a few years and makes the next round of work faster.
